The 2006 disaster brought about by Typhoon Reming in the Bicol
Region put MGB-V in the priority list of President Arroyo’s
calamity fund and received P3.8 million in funding for its
Geohazard Assessment in Bicol in the middle of 2007.
Geohazard surveys were
implemented and on-going for the current year in the Provinces
of Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay and Camarines Sur. Last year alone a
total of 14 Municipalities were assessed and surveyed.
Last
year, MGB-V through its Geohazard Assessment, was able to
identify 55 flood prone, 22 landslide prone areas in Bicol.
Of the 55 flood prone areas, 20
are in Camarines Sur near the Bicol River; 10 in Albay; 9 in
Camarines Norte; 8 in Sorsogon; 6 in Catanduanes and 2 in
Masbate.
The lake areas of Milaor, Nabua,
Bato and Baao in Camarines Sur are vulnerable to floods followed
by Libon, Oas, portion of Polangui and the coastal areas in
Legazpi City in Albay are high risks; Vinzons, Talisay, Mercedez
and Daet in Camarines Norte the most susceptible; so with Irosin,
Juban, and basin areas in Donsol in Sorsogon; Panganiban, Viga,
and Bagamanok in Catanduanes; and Coastal areas in Masbate City
and Milagros. |

7 municipalities in Catanduanes
are high risk for landslide with Gigmoto, San Miguel, Viga and
Caramoran as the most prone municipalities. In addition, 4
landslide prone areas are found in Albay particularly Manito and
Tiwi; 4 in Camarines Sur; 4 in Camarines Norte; and 3 in
Sorsogon. MGB-V continuous with its geohazard mapping per
Barangay in the Provinces to provide a more accurate and
detailed list of hazard prone areas.
The MGB-V also
continuous to update its geohazard-mapping list by way of
surveys, interviews and dialogue with Barangay officials. At
least 344 Barangays in Catanduanes, 242 in Albay, 98 in Sorsogon
and 83 in Camarines Norte are being assessed for flood and
landslide susceptibility.
