MGB-V bares 2003 accomplishments

 
DARAGA, ALBAY (March 26,2004) -“The performance of the regional office for the calendar year 2003 is more than satisfactory and almost all of the Key Result Areas (KRA’s) have been accomplished by more than 100%” Bicol Regional Director Reynulfo A. Juan of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-V) here said.

 Juan said some of the accomplishments worth mentioning were as follows: A total of five (5) illegal mining activities in Barangay Taysan in Legazpi City, Tinambac in Camarines Sur, Donsol, Sorsogon, and in Tiwi, Albay were investigated including one (1) illegal treasure hunting activity in Barangay Sabang in Legazpi City; A total of sixty-seven (67) requests, inquiries, and certifications were acted upon as priority matters under the One-Stop Shop (OSS) operation; Evaluated the effectiveness of the Safety and Health Program (SHP) of Goodfound Cement Corporation (GCC) in Camalig, Albay and the F.A. Baltazar Earthmoving and Mining Services for the purpose of assisting these companies in developing  a more efficient SHP; Conducted eight (8) routinary Safety and Occupational Health inspection at GCC/Ibalong Resources and Development Corporation (IRDC) in Camalig, Albay, Johson Gold Mining Corporation (JGMC) in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte and UBS in Legazpi City to determined their safe operations including safety records assessment; Assessed the abandoned quarry of ASAPHIL Corporation in Legazpi City and water quality in the rivers of Labo, Bosigon, Gumaus, and Gumaus Bay in Camarines Norte and Panique Creek and adjoining areas in Aroroy, Masbate affected by operating and closed abandoned mines to determined its imminent and adverse impact to the environment in the area; Assessed compliance of United Paragon Mining Corporation (UPMC) in Camarines Norte, IRDC/GCC, JGMC, and Filminera in Masbate to the “Adopt A Mountain, Adopt A Mining Forest” Program of the DENR. 


A total area of 67.60 hectares were assessed; Identified a five (5) hectares area in Barangay Bahao in Siruma, Camarines Sur as potential People’s Small Scale Mining Area (PSSMA)-Minahang Bayan (MB); Prepared Mineral Distribution Map (MDP) for the Provinces of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte and Masbate.

The map includes location of small-scale mining areas, rod mills and processing plants; Identified one (1) hectare communal area for sand and gravel extraction in Barangay Binanuahan, Juban, Sorsogon for housing and other personal construction needs of the local residents; Carried out hydro-geological and groundwater resource study of about 600 hectares in Cawayan, Masbate to assess and determine the groundwater potential in the area; Conducted geological and geo-technical hazards study of the Bicol segment of the Quirino Highway in Camarines Sur where road cracks, potholes and failed embankment slopes caused a lot of inconvenience to the riding public; Conducted solid waste disposal sites assessment in Lupi in Camarines Sur, Basud in Camarines Norte, Pandan, Catanduanes, and Barcelona in Sorsogon to identify suitable waste disposal sites and possible problems posed on the environment; A total of 370 determinations were rendered by the office laboratory in Daet, Camarines Norte benefiting both private and government projects; and Acted ten (10) requests for geohazard identifications  for housing/subdivision projects, one (1) for engineering geological and geohazard assessment and one (1) for geologic investigation of  housing project.
